We are delighted to share the work of Jannick Deslauriers, an artist who taught in the Visual Arts department at Cégep Marie-Victorin for more than 10 years and who called on Vestechpro to complete her most recent work: a vinyl coat embedded in ash.
A Creative Textile Research Study
Jannick Deslauriers’ inspirations are imbued with catastrophism, and often evoke the past and disappearance with sculptures of damaged cars or dilapidated buildings in Montreal. The starting point of her work is drawn from Internet research, but also from reading articles and essays on ghosts and apparitions, and black and white photos taken in the 19th century.
To add substance to her sculptures, Jannick Deslauriers mainly uses textiles such as tulle, nylon, and silk that offer a phantasmagorical aspect to her work. Over time, the artist has also developed new techniques such as placing snow on the fabric and then burning it to give it an old-fashioned look.
Jannick Deslauriers has recently focused on clothing in her research and development work. The “Wearing Confusion” series was developed from a sculpture that was partially completed at Vestechpro.

State of the Art Equipment to Bring All Your Ideas to Life
As part of this new artistic reflection, it was only natural that Jannick Deslauriers turned to Vestechpro. Her goal was to make a transparent vinyl coat shaped like a quilted coat that we are accustomed to seeing in the winter: down jackets.
In order to recreate the quilting of the plastic garment, we suggested the artist use a hot air welding machine.
This allows seams to be sealed with a uniform hot air jet directed at the textile pieces to be assembled. The seams are then compressed by two rollers, which merges them. Depending on the project and materials used, temperature and assembly speed can be modulated.
The seam finally obtained is airtight, and waterproof, therefore ensuring a long life for the work.
This assembly method is fast, and the machine configuration allows for a wide variety of materials to be assembled. Jannick made the coat in one day, the same day confinement time was announced when she arrived at our lab!
The artist observed the great creative potential offered by all the equipment and expertise available at Vestechpro such as 3D pattern modeling. We are proud to have been able to support Jannick in creating this unique work.
