Since the beginning of the health crisis, Vestechpro has played a major role in the Quebec clothing industry in addressing the personal protective equipment supply issue. Under its own impetus or those of its clients, the centre has also undertaken new projects and seized new opportunities. One project was to quality for a Government of Canada Assistance Program aimed at focusing research and development efforts in the fight against COVID-19.
Therefore, last August, Vestechpro responded to the call for projects from the Canada Foundation for Innovation through the Canada Infrastructure Fund for Exceptional Opportunities for the purposes of the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this fund is to equip Canadian researchers with the necessary infrastructure to combat issues arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a result of the level 2 washable medical gown applied research project, initiated by our client, MIP, Vestechpro was able to apply for and obtain funding to acquire medical gown test equipment. The equipment will allow the centre to conduct waterproofing tests on medical gowns for all standards in effect worldwide (CSA, ONGC, NIOSH, ANSI).
These performance tests will allow Canadian manufacturers wishing to produce medical gowns to pre-certify their product.
In addition, it should be noted that the local supply of personal protective equipment during the health crisis is not the only challenge to be taken up; the current absence of Canadian standards for PPE intended for the health sector is also a significant governance gap for Canada and adds to the risks to the health and safety of Canadians. CSA Group is therefore initiating a process of working with stakeholders and government agencies to develop Canadian standards for medical grade PPE.
